A first step for your family
Where can you ask for help?
A speech-language pathologist can evaluate your child’s speech and language skills. Your child’s doctor, an early intervention program or your local school district can help you find a starting point.

Texas Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) serves eligible children under age three. Contact the program in your area to ask about an evaluation and the next steps.

Ask your local school district about a speech and language evaluation. If your child is already in school, their teacher or school office can help you find the right contact.

You can also look for a speech-language pathologist. Ask whether they work with your child’s age group, which languages they offer and how payment or insurance works.

A few useful questions
Write down what worries you and a few examples of how your child communicates. When you contact a service, you can ask:
- How do I request an evaluation?
- Do you work with children my child’s age?
- Is there a waiting list, and what happens next?
- What will it cost, and is insurance or other support available?
