Local support

Find speech support for your child

Start with your child’s age and home address. These public programs and the university clinic can explain how to request an evaluation.

01

Under 3: find your local ECI program

Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) helps families of young children with developmental concerns. Search the Texas HHS finder with your home ZIP code. If it lists several programs, contact one to confirm which program serves your address. Explain your child’s age and the speech or language concerns you have noticed.

Age 3 and older: confirm your school district

Use the Texas school district locator, then confirm your home address with the district. Ask its special education team how to request an evaluation for your child. Houston city limits and neighborhood names do not determine school jurisdiction. A preschool or school evaluation checks eligibility; it does not guarantee services.

Houston ISD families

After confirming Houston ISD is responsible for your referral, follow its Child Find instructions. Contact your child’s school if your child is enrolled. The district explains separate steps for private school, homeschool, ECI transitions and children not enrolled in school.

University of Houston clinic

The Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic offers child speech and language evaluations and treatment. Call 713-743-0915 or email [email protected] to ask about appointments. Confirm fees, evaluation language, insurance, referral requirements and whether the clinic can meet your child’s needs.

Start with the local contacts above. Your child’s age and home address can help identify the appropriate service. Ask how to request an evaluation and what information to provide.

How do I request a school speech evaluation?

Find the school district serving your home address, then ask its special education or Child Find team about the evaluation process. A neighborhood name alone does not establish district assignment or eligibility.

Speech Blubs provides activities for practice at home with a caregiver. Local professionals provide evaluations and individual care. Ask your child’s therapist which home activities fit their goals.

Which languages are available in the app?

Speech Blubs lists app content in English (American and British), German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Swedish, Polish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Romanian. Check the current language options in the app and choose the one that fits your family before subscribing.

Where can I read or play with my child in Houston?

The park and library cards on this page suggest specific places to visit together. Check their linked official pages for current hours, access and events before you travel. If a destination is outside your neighborhood, plan the trip and confirm the entrance you want to use.

How much does Speech Blubs cost?

Speech Blubs is a subscription app. Check the current price, available trial and renewal terms directly in the quiz or your app store before subscribing.

IAH / Airport Area, Houston

A small family plan for IAH / Airport Area

Know IAH / Airport Area

The city uses IAH / Airport Area for the communities surrounding the airport as well as other land uses. This guide is for families living in that wider area. Keith-Wiess Park and Moody Library are Houston options to plan separately. Airport terminals and an airport mailing address do not establish the school district or early intervention program responsible for a child's home.

One idea for Keith-Wiess Park

A small outdoor visit can start before you reach Keith-Wiess Park. Let your child choose an item to bring, then use it as a familiar cue when you arrive. Follow something they notice from an appropriate public area. If they look at a vehicle, describe what it is doing and pause. There is no need to make the visit depend on seeing aircraft or hearing a particular sound.

Bring a book from Moody Neighborhood Library into play

At Moody Library, ask for a vehicle picture book that is available to borrow. Your child can choose a picture and move a toy in the same way. Use the vehicle they selected, even if it is different from the one you talked about outdoors.
