Questions from parents

Where can I start with speech therapy in Oakland?

Start with the local contacts above. Your child’s age and home address can help identify the appropriate service. Ask how to request an evaluation and what information to provide.

How do I request a school speech evaluation?

Find the school district serving your home address, then ask its special education or Child Find team about the evaluation process. A neighborhood name alone does not establish district assignment or eligibility.

Does Speech Blubs replace a speech therapist?

Speech Blubs provides activities for practice at home with a caregiver. Local professionals provide evaluations and individual care. Ask your child’s therapist which home activities fit their goals.

Which languages are available in the app?

Speech Blubs lists app content in English (American and British), German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Swedish, Polish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Romanian. Check the current language options in the app and choose the one that fits your family before subscribing.

Where can I read or play with my child in Oakland?

The park and library cards on this page suggest specific places to visit together. Check their linked official pages for current hours, access and events before you travel. If a destination is outside your neighborhood, plan the trip and confirm the entrance you want to use.

How much does Speech Blubs cost?

Speech Blubs is a subscription app. Check the current price, available trial and renewal terms directly in the quiz or your app store before subscribing.

Acorn, Oakland

Speech and language support for families in Acorn, Oakland

Start with one toy or a familiar-language book

West Oakland Branch at 1801 Adeline Street gives families in Acorn an Oakland book-and-play option. The branch lists toys for children ages 0–5. If a whole book feels like too much today, ask where the toys are and choose one together. You can describe a single action and let your child decide what happens next.

The small Arabic and Spanish collections offer another starting point. Ask staff to help you find a picture book in a language you use at home. The branch also has an African American collection and books for all ages, so head to children’s materials first. If arriving from the parking lot off 19th Street and Adeline, the rear entrance has a low-slope ramp and power-assisted doors. An elevator serves the multi-story building.

Keep an ordinary picnic separate from a booked activity

Middle Harbor Shoreline Park is a separate destination, built and operated by the Port of Oakland. You can look at birds and maritime activity from the shoreline paths. For an ordinary snack break, lawn areas and picnic tables without barbecue pits are first come, first served. Tables with pits must be reserved.

A family visit is different from the park’s organized educational field trips. The current operator page says its Fall 2026 field-trip application period is closed. You do not need to turn an ordinary outing into a program. The same page says AC Transit Line 13 no longer serves the middle harbor area, so check your transport and the live visitor information before leaving.

Ask for speech support when you need it

For a child under three, the Regional Center of the East Bay lists Early Start intake at 510-618-6195. For preschool assessment questions, Oakland Unified’s Early Childhood Evaluation Center lists 510-879-5013 and serves Oakland residents. Tell the service your child’s age and home address so it can explain the next step. Everyday play and Speech Blubs can support home practice; they do not replace an evaluation.
