Questions from parents

Where can I start with speech therapy in Oakland?

Start with the local contacts above. Your child’s age and home address can help identify the appropriate service. Ask how to request an evaluation and what information to provide.

How do I request a school speech evaluation?

Find the school district serving your home address, then ask its special education or Child Find team about the evaluation process. A neighborhood name alone does not establish district assignment or eligibility.

Does Speech Blubs replace a speech therapist?

Speech Blubs provides activities for practice at home with a caregiver. Local professionals provide evaluations and individual care. Ask your child’s therapist which home activities fit their goals.

Which languages are available in the app?

Speech Blubs lists app content in English (American and British), German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Swedish, Polish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Romanian. Check the current language options in the app and choose the one that fits your family before subscribing.

Where can I read or play with my child in Oakland?

The park and library cards on this page suggest specific places to visit together. Check their linked official pages for current hours, access and events before you travel. If a destination is outside your neighborhood, plan the trip and confirm the entrance you want to use.

How much does Speech Blubs cost?

Speech Blubs is a subscription app. Check the current price, available trial and renewal terms directly in the quiz or your app store before subscribing.

Speech and language support for families in West Oakland

Start with a toy or a book

West Oakland Branch at 1801 Adeline Street offers a simple choice for a small child: a toy or a book. The branch lists toys for ages 0–5 and books for all ages, including small Arabic and Spanish collections. Follow what your child chooses. If they roll a toy, you could say “roll it,” wait, and respond to their next look or movement.

Choose the entrance that works for your visit. The main Adeline Street entrance has a low-slope ramp and power-assisted doors. The rear entrance from the parking lot at 19th Street and Adeline has the same access features, and the building has an elevator. The library lists free patron-lot and street parking. Check the current branch hours; allow time to find a space.

Plan a separate shoreline outing

Middle Harbor Shoreline Park is a Port of Oakland destination for public shoreline paths and bird watching. Bird panels can help you notice something together without needing to identify every species. Point to a bird and say “bird there,” then let your child look, point or make a sound. A short visit can be enough. The Port lists wheelchair-accessible parking and restrooms.

Before going, use the Port’s driving directions: continue on 7th Street through the Middle Harbor Road intersection, then take the first right into the park parking lot. Do not plan around AC Transit Line 13; the Port says it no longer serves this area. The park page does not give general gate hours. Call the park manager at (510) 627-1434 to confirm current hours and conditions before leaving. Plan this as a separate city destination from the library.

For a picnic, the Port lists lawns and tables without barbecue pits as first come, first served. Tables with barbecue pits must be reserved, and a reservation requires the Park Manager’s confirmation. Respect reserved sections. Organized events and educational field trips have separate application processes; the fall 2026 field-trip application period is closed. An ordinary family outing does not include a booked program or exclusive use of a picnic area.

Use the right assessment contact for your child

If you are worried about speech or communication, keep a brief example of what you notice, such as how your child asks for help or responds during play. For a child under 3, ask the Regional Center of the East Bay about Early Start at (510) 618-6195. The agency serves Alameda and Contra Costa counties and determines eligibility.

For preschool assessment questions, call Oakland Unified’s Early Childhood Evaluation Center at (510) 879-5013. The center is at 950 53rd Street. Give your child’s age and home address so staff can explain the appropriate route. For children already in kindergarten or above, the district directs assessment through their elementary school. West Oakland is the planning area named in the city’s pedestrian data; that label does not assign a school or determine service eligibility. Library play and a park outing can support everyday conversation while you pursue an evaluation.
