Questions from parents

Where can I start with speech therapy in Oakland?

Start with the local contacts above. Your child’s age and home address can help identify the appropriate service. Ask how to request an evaluation and what information to provide.

How do I request a school speech evaluation?

Find the school district serving your home address, then ask its special education or Child Find team about the evaluation process. A neighborhood name alone does not establish district assignment or eligibility.

Does Speech Blubs replace a speech therapist?

Speech Blubs provides activities for practice at home with a caregiver. Local professionals provide evaluations and individual care. Ask your child’s therapist which home activities fit their goals.

Which languages are available in the app?

Speech Blubs lists app content in English (American and British), German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Swedish, Polish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Romanian. Check the current language options in the app and choose the one that fits your family before subscribing.

Where can I read or play with my child in Oakland?

The park and library cards on this page suggest specific places to visit together. Check their linked official pages for current hours, access and events before you travel. If a destination is outside your neighborhood, plan the trip and confirm the entrance you want to use.

How much does Speech Blubs cost?

Speech Blubs is a subscription app. Check the current price, available trial and renewal terms directly in the quiz or your app store before subscribing.

Piedmont Avenue, Oakland

Speech and language support for families around Piedmont Avenue, Oakland

Use the library’s own entrance

Piedmont Avenue Branch is an Oakland public library at 80 Echo Avenue. The branch is housed on Piedmont Avenue Elementary School’s campus, but plan your visit around the library’s hours and its entrance on Echo Avenue. The operator describes a low-slope ramp. A library visit does not give you access to classrooms or other school spaces.

Street parking can be difficult because the school and neighborhood are busy. Allow time to find a place and walk to the library. You can keep the visit small: find one book, share a page, then take it home if you have borrowing access. The branch lists books in English. Ask staff about a picture book that fits your child’s interests.

Choose a land visit at Lake Temescal

Temescal Regional Recreation Area is a separate Oakland destination, rather than a park presented as being inside Piedmont Avenue. The south entrance is at 6502 Broadway Terrace. The East Bay Regional Park District currently reports a blue-green algae Danger Advisory and says swimming is closed. It also reports the second wooden footbridge on Lower West Shore Trail closed for refurbishment. Check the latest alerts before choosing a route.

The operator identifies East Shore Trail as wheelchair accessible. Choose an open section that suits your family and follow posted restrictions. You can talk about going and returning—“this way” and “back again”—without needing to complete a full lake loop. Plan the library and park for different days if that is easier.

Ask about an assessment when you need help

For a child under 3, the Regional Center of the East Bay’s Early Start intake line is (510) 618-6195. The center serves Alameda and Contra Costa counties and checks eligibility; calling does not guarantee services. For preschool assessment questions, Oakland Unified’s Early Childhood Evaluation Center is at 950 53rd Street, with phone (510) 879-5013. Ask which route fits your child’s age and home address.

Oakland Unified directs children already in kindergarten or an older grade to their elementary school for assessment. A Piedmont Avenue neighborhood label does not decide school eligibility, and this guide is about Oakland rather than the separate City of Piedmont. A library visit or park conversation can support everyday interaction. It does not replace an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist.
