Questions from parents

Where can I start with speech therapy in Oakland?

Start with the local contacts above. Your child’s age and home address can help identify the appropriate service. Ask how to request an evaluation and what information to provide.

How do I request a school speech evaluation?

Find the school district serving your home address, then ask its special education or Child Find team about the evaluation process. A neighborhood name alone does not establish district assignment or eligibility.

Does Speech Blubs replace a speech therapist?

Speech Blubs provides activities for practice at home with a caregiver. Local professionals provide evaluations and individual care. Ask your child’s therapist which home activities fit their goals.

Which languages are available in the app?

Speech Blubs lists app content in English (American and British), German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Swedish, Polish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Romanian. Check the current language options in the app and choose the one that fits your family before subscribing.

Where can I read or play with my child in Oakland?

The park and library cards on this page suggest specific places to visit together. Check their linked official pages for current hours, access and events before you travel. If a destination is outside your neighborhood, plan the trip and confirm the entrance you want to use.

How much does Speech Blubs cost?

Speech Blubs is a subscription app. Check the current price, available trial and renewal terms directly in the quiz or your app store before subscribing.

Speech and language support for families in Mosswood, Oakland

Start with the play area that fits

Oakland’s current Mosswood facility page lists a tot lot for children ages 2–5 and a playground for ages 5–12 at 3612 Webster Street. Choose the area that fits your child’s age and needs. Picnic tables give you another option if a quiet pause works better than more play.

You can build a conversation around taking turns. Say “your turn” when your child begins and “my turn” when you join them. If they point toward something else, respond to that choice. A short exchange can be enough; the outing does not need a list of tasks.

Check the center before choosing a program

The city’s current page says the rebuilt Mosswood Recreation Center is open to the public. Organized activities are listed separately with a registration link. Public access does not mean every program is a drop-in activity. Check the specific activity for ages, dates, cost and enrollment before making a plan.

For an outdoor visit, follow posted closures and Oakland’s park-use rules. Stay on trails and leave plants and wildlife in place. During fire season, check Red Flag notices because affected parks can close to visitors.

Choose a separate Oakland library visit

Rockridge Branch is at 5366 College Avenue. Treat it as a separate Oakland destination rather than assuming it is in Mosswood. The branch’s College Avenue entrance has automatic doors, and its multi-story building has an elevator and accessible bathrooms. Its parking options include paid and free spaces; availability can vary.

If you are choosing a place on a hot day, the library says only its meeting room and teen zone are air-conditioned. Check the calendar for a Family Storytime that fits your plans, or select a book for home. Let your child choose a picture, add a few words about it and give them time to respond.

When you want an assessment

If your child is under 3 and lives in Alameda County, Regional Center of the East Bay’s Early Start intake line is (510) 618-6195. Explain your concern and ask about the next step. The center determines eligibility after assessment.

Oakland Unified’s Early Childhood Evaluation Center lists (510) 879-5013 at 950 53rd Street. Ask which evaluation route fits your child’s age and home address; families in another city should contact their own school district. Neighborhood labels do not determine eligibility. Speech Blubs provides home practice and does not replace an assessment or a speech-language pathologist.
