Forestland, Oakland
Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve is a separate outing for families in Forestland. Its main staging area is at 6800 Skyline Boulevard in Oakland. The two other staging areas on the operator page, Old Tunnel Road and Eastport, are in Orinda. Choose the exact entrance before leaving if you want the displays and viewing path described here.
The Skyline Boulevard visitor center is unstaffed. It has geology displays and self-guided brochures, but you should not expect a staff-led children’s activity. North of the center, the operator describes a 600-foot paved wheelchair path ending at a viewing platform. You can use a short out-and-back look rather than planning to climb Round Top.
The operator lists Sibley’s hours as 7am–10pm from March through October and 7am–6pm from November through February. Parking has no fee. Read the live alerts before travel. The wider preserve has several trail types, and occasional vehicles use paved Round Top Road. A paved surface alone does not tell you a route’s slope or whether it suits your family.
Point to a hill, a rock picture or something in the view your child already notices. Try one short description, then give them time to look or respond. You can stop there. Repeating a word later at home with a picture is enough; there is no need to finish a tour.
Montclair Branch at 1687 Mountain Boulevard is a separate Oakland option. It is single-story, with a flat accessible walkway from the sidewalk to its entrance.
