Questions from parents

Where can I start with speech therapy in Oakland?

Start with the local contacts above. Your child’s age and home address can help identify the appropriate service. Ask how to request an evaluation and what information to provide.

How do I request a school speech evaluation?

Find the school district serving your home address, then ask its special education or Child Find team about the evaluation process. A neighborhood name alone does not establish district assignment or eligibility.

Does Speech Blubs replace a speech therapist?

Speech Blubs provides activities for practice at home with a caregiver. Local professionals provide evaluations and individual care. Ask your child’s therapist which home activities fit their goals.

Which languages are available in the app?

Speech Blubs lists app content in English (American and British), German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Swedish, Polish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Romanian. Check the current language options in the app and choose the one that fits your family before subscribing.

Where can I read or play with my child in Oakland?

The park and library cards on this page suggest specific places to visit together. Check their linked official pages for current hours, access and events before you travel. If a destination is outside your neighborhood, plan the trip and confirm the entrance you want to use.

How much does Speech Blubs cost?

Speech Blubs is a subscription app. Check the current price, available trial and renewal terms directly in the quiz or your app store before subscribing.

Speech and language support for families in Upper Rockridge, Oakland

Pick the park entrance before the outing

Temescal Regional Recreation Area has two Oakland entrances: 6500 Broadway at the north end and 6502 Broadway Terrace at the south end. The park operator lists a larger north parking lot and a smaller south lot. Buses and trailered vehicles may not use the south lot. If you are driving, check the current seasonal parking fee and payment information before you choose an entrance. The park is cashless at the kiosk.

Keep this a land visit. The East Bay Regional Park District currently says swimming is closed because of a blue-green algae Danger Advisory. It also reports a closure of the second wooden footbridge on Lower West Shore Trail. Read the latest alerts before selecting an open route, and do not plan a complete lake loop based on an older map. The operator identifies East Shore Trail and the south playground as wheelchair accessible; choose what fits your family and follow posted restrictions.

A different day for books on College Avenue

Rockridge Branch is an Oakland Public Library destination at 5366 College Avenue. Its automatic entrance doors are on College Avenue and the multi-story building has an elevator. The operator lists paid and free parking options nearby, with no guarantee that a space will be available. Check branch hours and any holiday notices first. The meeting room and teen zone are air-conditioned; the branch does not describe the entire building that way.

The branch calendar includes Family Storytime, but read the current event details for its date, age guidance and any registration. You can also choose a book without planning around an event. Ask for a picture book that your child will want to revisit. These are two named city destinations for families from Upper Rockridge; this guide does not assert that either is inside the neighborhood or that you can walk between them.

Ask for help without waiting for an event

For a child under 3, the Regional Center of the East Bay’s Early Start intake line is (510) 618-6195. The center serves Alameda and Contra Costa counties and checks eligibility. A library event is not required before you ask about an assessment.

For preschool assessment questions in Oakland, call Oakland Unified’s Early Childhood Evaluation Center at (510) 879-5013. The center lists 950 53rd Street as its address. Tell the service your child’s age and ask which route fits your home address. Children already in kindergarten or an older grade can be assessed through their elementary school. A neighborhood name does not decide eligibility, and everyday reading does not replace a speech-language evaluation.
